Ted Francisco, one of our experienced HVAC contractors, went to their Linden NJ home to see what the issue was. He found that their boiler had a cracked heat exchanger. Due to the fact that this issue is not repairable, he recommended a boiler replacement for their Linden NJ home.
Problem: The Lemongelli-Medoya home felt uncomfortable. Their American Standard hot water boiler had exceeded its lifespan and had a cracked heat exchanger. They will save on their monthly energy costs.
The Peerless WBV 03 comes in three different sizes, depending on a home’s heating needs. The sizes vary between 3-5 sections. However, the three different sizes all have 8 firing rates. The boiler is made from cast iron and has a steel outer shell. This steel outer shell serves to prevent the loss of heat. All units have steel push nipples and these boilers all come with a swing door. This swing door allows for easy access for repairs and maintenance.
Not only do Peerless boilers offer a higher level of comfort and energy efficiency, but they are also backed by one of the best warranties in the boiler industry. Many other manufacturers offer prorated warranties, whereas, Peerless offers a “full cost” warranty for the duration of the warranty. For their water boilers, they offer a lifetime warranty and for their steam boilers, they offer a ten-year warranty period. This is for all registered products and the warranty covers boilers that have defects in materials/parts and workmanship under normal operating conditions. With this type of warranty, it is obvious that Peerless stands by their products which gives peace of mind for those who choose to install them.

When your heating system has a cracked heat exchanger, it requires a replacement. With oil-fired systems, you will smell oil fumes or see a sooty wall around the vent which are both indicators that you need to call for heating services right away. These types of fumes are dangerous and therefore, you should not wait to call when you smell oil or see soot.
When your oil burner ignites at the start of the heating cycle, the pressure in the combustion chamber increases. In a normal venting situation, the smoke from the unused oil moves to the fresh air chamber, or the heat exchanger, and out of your house. In a situation where there is a cracked heat exchanger, the fumes from the unused oil circulate throughout your house, affecting the air that you breathe.
Carbon monoxide is a byproduct of combustion. This is regardless of the fuel that is utilized. With properly vented appliances or HVAC equipment, the carbon monoxide is directed outside. When there is a cracked heat exchanger, the vents that disperse these toxic fumes outside usually become blocked and the necessary air supply that direct these fumes outdoors is not sufficient. Fortunately, for those who have oil-fired systems, the risk of CO poisoning is low. Oil systems give clear indicators that there is an issue before it gets to the point of a CO leak. However, all homes should install CO detectors to prevent the issues that come with a CO leak, including fatalities.
